Dear Friends, friends of Friends, and others,
Today we are sharing with you another core concept from our new Pendle Hill pamphlet, “Race, Systemic Violence, and Retrospective Justice: An African American Quaker Scholar-Activist Challenges Conventional Narratives,” by Dr. Harold D. Weaver, Jr.
Our theme this week is urgent in the USA today: voter suppression, an element of political structural violence. As we are in the Election cycle, it has become very clear that Donald Trump and his re-election committee and other supporters are trying their hardest to suppress the African American vote (as well as the vote of other marginalized groups). It is vital that we understand how Trump is attempting to dismantle our political system.
Recently, Trump and his Republican allies have stepped up efforts to suppress the Black vote in the following major ways, among many:
Gerrymandering of electoral districts to split up the African American vote
Disenfranchisement of returning citizens
Poll tax for returning citizens (Florida as current example)
Voter ID and signature match laws
Voter intimidation by “poll watchers”
Restrictions and disqualification of mail ballots, including dismantling the USPS
Disinformation about voting, polling places, and mail-in ballots
Lawsuits against voter enfranchisement
The pamphlet is now available for order through the Pendle Hill Bookstore.
